RESOLUTIONS
Commissioners Corner

We had an interesting and informative day at the commissioners meeting Nov.15.

Bill Dutro, Director of the Colorado Small Business Development  Center at Otero Junior College gave us some insight to the purpose and function of the center.

In spite of the recession experienced by the state and nation, the OJC Center has been instrumental in promoting growth and progress in the six county SE Colo. Region (Baca, Bent, Crowley, Kiowa, Prowers and Otero). In the period 2007 thru 2009 they have started 37 businesses, creating 183 jobs while formulating capital of 10.14 Million Dollars.  The CSBDC is dedicated to helping entrepreneurs start and expand small businesses by offering free and confidential management consulting.  They assist clients in starting or improving a business and solving management problems. They educate clients in all facets of the business planning process. They empower clients to master future planning and problem solving skills.

Actually there are several entities that offer loans and funding for business development and retention in the region. The type of help offered by the CSBDC can greatly enhance the success of these business ventures.  Financing is critical but managing that capital is equally critical.

If anyone would like to learn more give Bill a call at 719-384-6959 or e-mail bill.dutro@ojc.edu.

We also met with representatives of Tri-State and Xcel  Energy and asked about the construction and placement of transmission lines. They are in process of submitting an application for a condition of need for transmission in this area. Once that need is established the process of placement of lines would  ensue. Not only have we not signed any agreement or request with them, we have not honored their request for letters or resolutions of support. We expect to gain more information about the transmission issue at the CCI conference and at a follow up meeting in early Dec.

We continue to make 2011 budget reductions. The intent is to come very close to a balance through additional reduction and under spending the 2010 budget.
